Vacancy notice and request for applications
Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline of Judges
The Missouri Bar Board of Governors is seeking applications from members of The Missouri Bar for appointment to serve on the constitutional Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline of Judges for a term of six years, beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, and ending on Dec. 31, 2029. The Board of Governors will be making two appointments to the commission. In addition, the Board of Governors will be selecting two alternate commissioners. The Appointments Committee will employ a two-step review process and select a limited number of applicants for a second stage of videoconference interviews with the committee. The full selection process will be completed at either the September or November meeting of the Board of Governors.
The Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline was created in 1972, when Missouri voters approved ยง 24 of article 5 of the Constitution of Missouri. The commission is a constitutional entity responsible for receiving and investigating all requests and suggestions for retirement for disability and all complaints concerning misconduct of all Missouri judges and members of the nonpartisan judicial commissions.
The commission consists of six members who serve staggered terms of six years: two members of the general public who are not members of The Missouri Bar, appointed by the governor; two members of The Missouri Bar appointed by the Board of Governors of The Missouri Bar; one judge of the Court of Appeals selected a majority of the judges of the Court of Appeals; and one circuit court judge selected by a majority of the circuit court judges of the state. If a member is disqualified to participate in any matter before the commission, the respective selecting authority selects a substitute to sit during such qualification.
Members are not compensated for their work but may receive their actual and necessary expenses. The commission schedules meetings throughout the year and regularly communicates by phone and e-mail. The commission is supported by professional staff.
