When to Pay

This tip is provided by Dee Crocker of the Oregon State Bar Professional Liability Fund.

Ever wonder why some clients don’t pay your invoice immediately? Perhaps it’s because your invoice doesn’t contain a due date. Bills from the mortgage company, electric company, credit card company, etc., always emphasize when payment is due, and your invoice should likewise. A simple paragraph to include at the end of each invoice:

WHEN TO PAY: While we leave our fee in your hands, we can’t leave it there forever. Please send your payment and any feedback within 21 days after you get this invoice. We thank you for your business.

Most clients won’t bother to submit any feedback, but some will. Read their comments carefully, and, if a change is needed, let them know you are making the change immediately.
