Incumbents in this position perform legal work in the City Counselor’s Office as strategists and litigation counsel addressing public health concerns, predatory business practices, and civil rights matters that affect the people of the City of St. Louis as well as direct harms to and the constitutionality of laws impacting the City of St. Louis itself in proactive plaintiffs' litigation on behalf of the City.

About Us: The Civil Law Department for the City houses more than fifty (50) lawyers and twenty five (25) support staff.

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; current membership in The Missouri Bar in good standing or licensure in another state with eligibility for reciprocity in Missouri; plus four years of legal practice in civil litigation.

- Drafts and reviews legal documents such as contracts, ordinances, pleadings, settlement agreements, legal briefs, legal opinions, motions, and depositions.
- May provide legal advice and instruction to junior department staff.
- Provides legal counsel and opinion to other city department staff.
- May prepare for and try cases: including interviewing and deposing witnesses; handling depositions; conducting discovery; preparing pleadings, motions, stipulations, and other material connected with litigation.
- Performs legal research.
- Negotiates and recommends the payment of cash settlements or other dispositions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
