The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for ensuring compliance in the design, structure, implementation and administration of health and wellness benefit plans and retirement plans in a manner consistent with ethical standards and Concordia Plans values.
Essential Job Functions
♦ Handle a variety of complex legal matters and projects related to multiple-employer employee benefit plans.
♦ Prepare, review and revise plan documents, employee communications and board resolutions.
♦ Oversee regulatory matters, including filings, related to retirement, health, life, and disability plans.
♦ Prepare IRS determination letter requests and other employee benefits-related governmental filings.
♦ Conduct and oversee legal research on retirement, health, life, and disability plans.
♦ Respond to regulator inquiries and research related issues.
♦ Provide advice on employee benefit plan compliance and resolution of compliance issues. Advise on a variety of employee benefits, tax, corporate and employment issues.
♦ Review statutory, regulatory and other governmental pronouncements to assess the impact on employee benefit plans.
♦ Supervise and coordinate the work of outside counsel.
♦ Communicate effectively, including in presentations, with all internal constituents including senior management and the Board, as well as external organizations including employers, employees of various employers, government agencies, non-governmental organizations and outside counsel.
♦ Build and maintain relationships with corporate counsel at similar organizations.
Education and Experience
♦ Bachelor's Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
♦ Licensed attorney (Missouri) or licensed in another state and willing to obtain Missouri license.
♦ Five years of experience in a law firm or corporate law-related setting.
♦ Five years of experience in employee benefits to include complex contracts preferred or a combined practice of employee benefits and another relevant area such as tax.
