The Claims Attorney is a licensed professional who provides expert legal support and advice to mitigate liability and future exposure for MECC and its insureds on workers’ compensation and employers’ liability claims. This role serves as an expert resource for the Claims Department and Regional Teams, offering guidance on settlement, Medicare compliance, insurance coverage, litigation strategy, third-party recovery, and employers' liability.


Key Responsibilities:
Handle legal referrals with timely review, management, and quality legal analysis.
Support Analysts and Regional Teams in settling claims by identifying ripe claims, assisting with evaluation and strategy, and negotiating settlements.
Serve as a resource on Medicare issues and various settlement methods.
Manage external resources, including outside counsel.
Monitor legal developments and educate stakeholders on trends.
Interact with Midwest Employers Casualty Company clients and representatives, embodying the Midwest Employers Casualty Company brand.
Act as a leader and mentor within the Claims Department.
Develop strategies to mitigate loss and operate independently with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
Active bar license in at least one state.
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of relevant legal experience handling workers’ compensation claims, auto/general liability injury claims, insurance defense, insurance coverage, and/or litigation.
Experience negotiating high exposure claims involving Medicare issues.
Demonstrates sound legal analysis and judgment.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrates the ability to influence manage internal and external stakeholders.
Adept at negotiation.
Excellent listening and interpersonal skills.
Keen attention to detail.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Highly self-motivated and directed.
