Clay County is seeking a dedicated and experienced Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II to join the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. This role is responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases, conducting case reviews, preparing and filing charges, negotiating plea agreements, and representing the State in hearings, trials, and post-conviction matters.

The APA II will collaborate closely with law enforcement, communicate with victims and witnesses, and manage a dynamic caseload requiring clear judgment, strong advocacy skills, and professionalism.

What You’ll Do
• Review and file criminal charges
• Prepare cases for trial or negotiated disposition
• Conduct preliminary hearings, motion hearings, and trials
• Provide legal guidance to law enforcement
• Communicate with victims/witnesses
• Handle rotating after-hours responsibilities

Qualifications
• JD and Missouri law license in good standing
• Minimum 3 years of trial experience (jury & bench)
• Strong knowledge of criminal law, evidence, and trial procedure
• Effective communication and case-management skills
• Valid driver’s license and insurance

Preferred
• First-chair experience on Class A/B felonies
• Post-conviction litigation knowledge
