The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations and to protect and advance legal interests or mitigate risk to achieve the mission and purposes of The Missouri Bar under the supervision of the General Counsel.

The Assistant General Counsel will also be responsible for overseeing specials projects by providing high-level professional and technical support to special committees and projects, with a primary focus on the Judicial Performance Review (JPR) Committee by serving as the main point of contact for committee leadership, delivering essential administrative, organizational, and logistical support to ensure smooth and effective operations.

The position involves frequent interaction with committee members, bar staff, Missouri lawyers and judges at all levels, and requires adaptability in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
The position also involves collaborating on statewide communications regarding committee work.

Purpose:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Provide legal advice to the Executive Director and staff of The Missouri Bar under the supervision of the General Counsel.
  • Monitor and stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards that impact The Missouri Bar to anticipate and identify legal issues and assist in developing legal strategies and solutions.
  • Conduct legal research; prepare legal documents (including opinions, memoranda, briefs, reports); and provide legal interpretations, risk analyses, and solution-oriented recommendations in support of the operations, strategic mission, and purposes of The Missouri Bar.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate various contracts and agreements, including without limit, commercial contracts, vendor agreements, and partnership agreements.
  • Recommend policy and procedure updates and assist with policy and procedure development.
  • Manage and coordinate special projects of strategic concern and/or legal importance to The Missouri Bar.
  • Serve as a committee liaison helping to educate and guide committee members on the committee scope, committee responsibilities, and current processes and coordinating committee and project activities with other departments and staff at the Bar.
  • Support committee efforts by researching background materials, analyzing information, following-up on assigned tasks or decisions, and ensuring key milestones and deliverables are accomplished on time.
  • Collaborate on state-wide communications on behalf of committee, including management and upkeep of websites.
  • Coordinate meeting logistics, including room setup, travel arrangements, and technical and administrative support for both in-person and virtual participation.
  • Proactively look for solutions and better practices to mitigate risk and maximize legal rights.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel
     

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

The Assistant General Counsel must be licensed to practice law in Missouri and be a member of The Missouri Bar in good standing (or be eligible for admission to practice in Missouri within a reasonable time after employment). A juris doctorate

degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and 2 or more years of experience practicing law are required. Experience as in-house counsel or providing general counsel-type services to an organization, including experience in project management, or working with formal project plans, is preferred. Demonstrated experience working with governmental, non-profit, or trade/professional association boards or committees is also preferred. Proven ability to think strategically, analyze complex legal issues, and provide practical solutions.

  • Ability to anticipate and analyze intersecting legal, regulatory, and operational issues in a variety of regulated and risk areas.
  • Ability to develop and implement legal strategies and solutions.
  • Even temperament and ability to deliver unwelcome advice, deal with unhappy stakeholders, and manage challenging situations.
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with multiple workstreams and multiple departments or individuals.
  • Proactive problem-solver with strong judgment and the ability to anticipate needs with minimal supervision.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and customer service orientation, especially under pressure.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Working knowledge of legal and office technology (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams; Adobe Acrobat; and remote work technology) and willingness to learn evolving technology for purposes of effective administration.
  • Knowledge of the judicial system and procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal documentation procedures and requirements.
