Job Number: 01-260420-02: Attorney (Multiple Statewide Locations)
Company: Missouri State Public Defender System
Public Defender Trial Attorney – Missouri State Public Defender (Multiple Locations)
The Missouri State Public Defender System (MSPD) is dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With offices located throughout Missouri, MSPD offers attorneys the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, from urban to rural communities, while making a meaningful impact in the lives of clients and the justice system.
As a Public Defender Trial Attorney, you will serve as a critical advocate for your clients, representing them at all stages of criminal proceedings. This role involves building strong client relationships, providing legal counsel, conducting thorough case investigations, and effectively advocating in court. Attorneys are responsible for managing a diverse caseload, preparing cases for trial, and ensuring clients are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
Key responsibilities include interviewing clients and witnesses, reviewing discovery and law enforcement reports, conducting legal research, and drafting motions, pleadings, and briefs. Attorneys regularly appear in court for hearings, dockets, and trials, and work collaboratively with colleagues, support staff, and experts to develop strong defense strategies. MSPD emphasizes a holistic approach to representation, recognizing and addressing the broader challenges that may impact clients.
MSPD is committed to the professional growth of its attorneys, offering ongoing training and nationally recognized trial skills programs. Attorneys are encouraged to engage in continuing legal education and develop their advocacy skills throughout their careers.
Qualified candidates must be licensed to practice law in Missouri, eligible for licensure, or in the process of transferring a license. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong communication and advocacy skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a commitment to public service and criminal defense. A collaborative mindset, attention to detail, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment are essential.
This full-time position offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive State of Missouri benefits package, including a defined pension plan, generous leave, and health insurance options. MSPD provides a rewarding opportunity to build a meaningful legal career while serving communities across the state.
