The City of Columbia is seeking a full-time attorney in the Prosecution Division of the City Law Department primarily responsible for the prosecution of cases on behalf of the City in the Municipal Court.

Under limited supervision provides legal counsel and representation to the management, staff and officials of the City; prosecutes cases on behalf of the City in Municipal Court and other courts of competent jurisdiction.

Reviews cases involving violation of City Code; drafts and signs charging documents when prosecution is warranted.

Conducts legal research, review and draft legal documents and reports, including memorandums, pleadings, search warrants, and discovery responses.

Interprets local, State and Federal laws, rules and regulations.

Renders sound written and oral opinions.

Performs detail-related work pertaining to assigned duties, including but not limited to all matters related to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violations.

Attends and represents the City in judicial proceedings related to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violations on behalf of the city, including but not limited to the examination of witnesses, cross-examination of adverse witnesses, and oral argument before the Court on motions.

Confers with citizens and defense attorneys with respect to alleged ordinance violations and necessary corrective action.

Confers with victims and witness in criminal cases.

Conduct discovery, prepare witnesses and exhibits, conduct trial and post-trial appeal proceedings.

Negotiates equitable resolutions for pending cases.

Provides counsel and training to police officers, code enforcement officers, department heads and other appropriate city officials on issues related to municipal court prosecution.

Prepares or assists in the preparation of City ordinances.
