General Counsel
The General Counsel is responsible for overseeing legal matters and providing legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations to achieve the mission and purposes of The Missouri Bar.

General Counsel

Purpose: The General Counsel is responsible for overseeing legal matters and providing legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations to achieve the mission and purposes of The Missouri Bar. The General Counsel will provide strategic insights and take the lead in managing risks and protecting The Missouri Bar’s best interests.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice to the Board of Governors and its Executive Committee and to departments and committees of The Missouri Bar Monitor and stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards that impact The Missouri Bar to anticipate and identify legal issues and assist in developing legal strategies and solutions
  • Provide guidance and compliance recommendations consistent with Keller v. State Bar of California and related cases as relevant to a unified state bar
  • Conduct legal research; prepare legal documents (including opinions, memoranda, briefs, reports); and provide legal interpretations, risk analyses, and solution-oriented recommendations in support of the operations, strategic mission, and purposes of The Missouri Bar
  • Oversee litigation matters, legal investigations, and other legal proceedings, working with external counsel when necessary
  • Recommend and monitor the work of outside counsel
  • Review, draft, and negotiate various contracts and agreements, including without limit, client contracts, vendor agreements, and partnership agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms and conditions, protecting The Missouri Bar’s interest.
  • Recommend policy and procedure updates and assist with policy and procedure development
  • Participate in meetings of the Board of Governors and its Executive Committee, and other meetings of staff or members of The Missouri Bar, to address legal issues
  • Manage and coordinate special projects of strategic concern and/or legal importance to The Missouri Bar
  • Proactively identify risks and propose solutions to mitigate or eliminate them
  • Prepare and manage an annual budget for risk management
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Board of Governors


Required Education, Experience and Skills: 
The General Counsel must be licensed to practice law in Missouri and be a member of The Missouri Bar in good standing (or be eligible for admission to practice in Missouri within a reasonable time after employment). A juris doctorate degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and ten or more years of experience practicing law are required. Five or more years of experience as a general counsel or in a senior legal leadership role are preferred. Understanding of corporate governance and demonstrated experience working with a governing body are also preferred. Proven ability to think strategically, analyze complex legal issues, and provide practical solutions.

Lawyers’ Assistance Program Clinician and Well-Being Coordinator
The Lawyers’ Assistance Program Clinician and Well-Being Coordinator provides direct services and program support for the bar’s lawyer well-being initiative and the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program, a confidential counseling program that serves lawyers, judges, law students, and their immediate family members.

Lawyers’ Assistance Program Clinician and Well-Being Coordinator

Purpose: The Lawyers’ Assistance Program Clinician and Well-Being Coordinator provides direct services and program support for the bar’s lawyer well-being initiative and the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program, a confidential counseling program that serves lawyers, judges, law students, and their immediate family members. The clinician and coordinator provides counseling and support to lawyers, judges, law students, and their families dealing with a broad range of concerns including substance use, depression, anxiety or other mental health concerns, marital and family matters, work-related stress, and other personal challenges to enhance personal and professional success. The Lawyers’ Assistance Program Clinician and Well-Being Coordinator works to evaluate and assist legal professionals, refer for relevant services, grow and strengthen the program, and support the bar’s lawyer well-being initiative.

General Qualifications: This position requires a wide range of clinical experience, the ability to assist members of the legal profession, a willingness to be accessible to those seeking help, knowledge in the use of the DSM, responsiveness to those seeking help, ability to effectively manage crisis, ability to manage multiple priorities, sound clinical judgment, strong oral and written communication skills, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. The position also requires assisting the Director in recruiting and training volunteers, maintaining an effective referral program, and planning and delivering educational programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in operating confidential helpline, serving lawyers, judges, law students, immediate family members, and concerned colleagues
  • Provides assessment, counseling, crisis intervention, referrals, and follow-up with clients dealing with a broad range of concerns, including but not limited to, alcohol and other substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, stress and burnout, gambling, career transition, work-life balance, family, marital, and social concerns
  • Provides services by phone, virtual platform, or in person, within scope of license
  • Updates and maintains provider resource list
  • Documents services and activities in a timely and accurate manner
  • Prepares minutes for the Standing Committee on Well-Being in the Profession (WBIP) and the WBIP Stigma Subgroup
  • Publicizes the initiative and the program, including writing relevant blog articles for use in Missouri Bar publications and social media
  • Collaborates with the Missouri Lawyers’ Assistance Program director to increase program visibility and service utilization
  • Provides staff support for the bar’s lawyer well-being initiative
  • Maintains professional license and malpractice insurance
  • Maintains high standards of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Provides consultation on request
  • Participates in other activities of the bar and performs other duties as assigned


Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a closely related field and current related Missouri license
  • A minimum three years of relevant treatment experience

Meetings Coordinator
The Missouri Bar is seeking applications for a Meetings Coordinator.  This role is responsible for coordinating and facilitating meetings, retreats, and events for members of The Missouri Bar Board of Governors and Young Lawyers’ Section Council (YLS).

Meetings Coordinator

Responsibilities:

Meetings, Retreats, & Events
  • Under the direction of the Director of Committees & Meetings, identify, evaluate, and secure contract with venues for offsite meetings, retreats, and other meetings.
  • Responsible for reaching out to collect RSVPs, confirm rooming needs, identify special meal requests, and gather other meeting-related details.
    • Track responses accurately, follow up as needed, and update plans or logistics based on changes or new information.
  • Prepare event-related documents (banquet event orders – BEOs) arranging room set up, menus, audio-visual needs, and remote participation as needed.
  • Secure and coordinate transportation logistics for meeting-related activities as needed, ensuring timely and efficient travel for attendees.
  • Oversee meeting setup and execution, assist hotel staff and internal team during setup to ensure meeting rooms and meal functions alight with the specifications outline in the BEOs.
  • Review final bills, reconcile with contracts and BEOs, dispute incorrect charges, and submit for final payments, working with accounting for post-event invoices when applicable.
  • Coordinate event materials and hospitality: ordering, organizing, and distributing mementos, gifts, awards, and hospitality suite supplies to support a seamless meeting experience.
Other Areas
  • Virtual meeting and webinar support for Committee Meetings and virtual Annual Meeting. Serve as the staff support for the technical run-through prior to Zoom webinars, assisting with setup, troubleshooting, and coordination. Provide live support to members during the webinar to ensure a smooth and successful virtual experience.
  • Manage and track prize donations: responsible for soliciting prize donations and maintaining accurate records of all contributions, including donor information, item details, and distribution status.
  • Assist with coordinating and managing details related to exhibitors and affiliate meetings, including communication, logistics, and on-site support as needed.
  • Perform additional organizational tasks as assigned, ensuring flexibility and responsiveness to evolving needs.
  • Must be available for occasional after-hours support and willing to travel as necessary to support meetings and related activities.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required and a minimum of eight years equivalent experience in meetings and events management; or,
  • Associate’s degree in business administration, hospitality management, or related area and four years equivalent experience in meetings and event management; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, hospitality management, or related area, required.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating onsite and offsite meetings, retreats, and events preferred.
  • Experience working with boards, commissions, committees, and associations preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, experience with Zoom, and AMS databases preferred.
