01-260528-02: Associate Attorney - Family Law

Lotspeich Law, LLC

Warrensburg, Missouri

We are looking for an early-career attorney who wants real litigation experience, strong compensation, and a genuine work-life balance. This role is designed for someone who wants to focus entirely on being a great advocate—without the pressure of bringing in clients, marketing, or running the administrative side of a law firm.

Experience: zero to three (0–3) Years (Ideal for recent grads, UMKC Family Law Clinic students, and newer attorneys)

Location: Warrensburg, Missouri (Primarily In-Person)

Job Number: 01-260528-02: Associate Attorney - Family Law

Company Name:  Lotspeich Law, LLC

About the Role
Are you looking for meaningful courtroom experience without the big-city burnout? Lotspeich Law, LLC is a growing boutique family law firm serving clients across Central Missouri, including Johnson, Henry, Lafayette, and Pettis Counties.

Why Central Missouri? (The City vs. Rural Advantage)
The big-city legal market can be hyper-competitive and adversarial. Practicing in our service area offers a completely different experience:

Better Culture: The local bars and courts in Henry, Lafayette, Johnson, and Pettis counties are professional, practical, and highly collegial. Judges are accessible.

Access to Justice: You will do work that matters. There is an immense need for excellent legal representation outside the metro area, allowing you to make a direct, tangible impact on families.

Room to Breathe: You can build a reputation quickly in a community where excellence is noticed and respected, all while maintaining a life outside the office.

The High-Achieving, High-Reward Model

We don't expect you to sacrifice your personal life to arbitrary billable hour targets, but we do reward efficiency, productivity, and excellent client service.

The Financials: Your base salary starts at $65,000, but our bonus structure is transparent and highly achievable. Efficient, client-focused attorneys can easily earn $85,000 to $100,000+ in total annual compensation.

The Tools: We provide the clients, case management systems (MyCase), templates, tech, and workflows.

The Expectation: We practice a "high-autonomy, high-accountability" model. We will give you the tools and mentorship to succeed, but we are looking for self-motivated individuals who can problem-solve, use the resources provided, and move cases forward without needing to be micromanaged for every minor detail.

Key Responsibilities

Manage family law matters (divorce, custody, modifications, support) from intake through litigation.
Draft high-quality pleadings, motions, discovery, and correspondence.
Represent clients confidently in court hearings and mediations.
Communicate with empathy and clarity to clients going through stressful life transitions.
Collaborate with and delegate tasks effectively to firm paralegals.

Who You Are (Culture Fit)

Empathetic yet Grounded: You can guide a family law client through an emotional crisis while maintaining professional boundaries and a clear head.
Resourceful. You utilize the resources we have available and problem solve.
A Strong Multi-Tasker: You can handle multiple case deadlines without letting details slip through the cracks.
Professional: You treat court staff, opposing counsel, and colleagues with unwavering respect.

Qualifications

J.D. from an accredited law school (UMKC Family Law Clinic or trial advocacy experience is a major plus).
Licensed to practice in Missouri (or pending bar exam results).
0–3 years of legal experience.
Commitment to a primarily in-person role in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Compensation: $65,000 Base | $85,000 – $100,000+ Realistic First-Year Total Compensation (Performance-Based Bonuses)

Interested Parties/How to Apply:

Email your resume and a brief cover letter and a writing sample to amanda@lotspeichlaw.com

In your cover letter, tell us why this would be a three-way win: a win for you, a win for our firm, and a win for our clients.

ABOUT THE OFFICE OF STAFF ATTORNEYS: The Eighth Circuit Office of Staff Attorneys is based in downtown St. Louis, Missouri, the seat of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Staff attorneys support the Court as a whole rather than individual judges, assisting the Court in its review of decisions appealed from the district courts in the seven states that make up the Eighth Circuit, and from federal government agencies. The staff attorneys’ principal task is the preparation of written legal memoranda to advise the Court in its review of matters that will be decided on written submissions only (without oral argument), including all pro se appeals and certain counseled cases. The types of matters on which staff attorneys work include: direct criminal appeals of convictions and sentences imposed under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines; collateral attacks on criminal convictions, by state and federal prisoners; civil rights actions under 42 U.S.C. § 1983; and cases involving a variety of other areas of law, such as employment discrimination, tax, bankruptcy, immigration, and Social Security benefits. At present, the office is comprised of twenty-seven employees, including line staff attorneys (some of whom are in career positions and some of whom are in two-year term positions), supervisors, administrative support staff, and the Senior Staff Attorney.

POSITION OVERVIEW, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This Staff Attorney III position is a career position. Career staff attorneys provide depth and experience to the office and are expected to be able to work on complex cases in all areas of the law. The primary focus of the Staff Attorney III position is to provide procedural and substantive legal analysis and advice regarding the disposition of appeals pending before the court. Duties include reviewing district court and agency records and appellate filings and extracting relevant information; discerning legal issues presented and conducting in-depth legal research; and, in each case, preparing for a three-judge panel a written memorandum that accurately and concisely presents the facts and a legal analysis, and recommends a disposition of the appeal. When appropriate, staff attorneys also prepare proposed opinions and orders for consideration by three-judge panels. In addition, the Staff Attorney III may be involved in training, mentoring, and reviewing the work of less-experienced staff attorneys. Career staff attorneys report to Supervisory Staff Attorneys, who oversee and edit staff attorney work.

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a law school that has been accredited by a recognized accrediting authority and must be admitted to practice before the highest court of a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or Possession of the United States. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Interviews of selected candidates will be conducted in St. Louis, Missouri, and applicants must bear their own travel expenses. Video conference interviews will be considered for candidates for whom an in-person interview would be unduly burdensome. The selected candidate will be subject to a background check and subsequent favorable suitability determination as a condition of employment. All employees of the Judiciary are “at will” employees in the excepted service. The U.S. Courts require employees to adhere to a Code of Ethics and Conduct which is available to applicants for review upon request.
