• Provide legal advice (oral and written) to non-attorney Department of Economic Development (DED) team members on numerous issues effecting the day-to-day operations and activities of DED’s economic and community development incentive programs (e.g., tax credits, tax increment financing, grants, and other tax incentives), drawing upon many areas of the law, including:
 Interpretation of constitutional provisions, statutes, and regulations
 Administrative law
 Contract law
• Advise non-attorney team members on implementation of new DED programs, including reviewing and editing program guidelines and forms, and ensuring cross-program requirements are included. (DED set up five new programs this past year and has three new programs from the recent legislative session.)

The primary role of the staff counsel is to answer these ethics questions, and the ideal candidate must have excellent communication, writing, and research skills, as well as sound judgment, to ensure that each ethics inquiry is handled consistently and professionally.  A keen interest in listening, asking questions as appropriate, researching, and problem solving is required for this position.  The staff counsel position reports to the Legal Ethics Counsel and works closely with the Legal Ethics Counsel to ensure consistency and professionalism.

Additionally, students with potential interest in business-related fields are presented with a variety of skills training options through a team-taught Transactional Lawyering Skills Lab course and other simulation courses, an Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, an Intellectual Property Clinic, and competitions, internships, externships, and supervised independent study opportunities.

One component of the faculty position would be teaching a Business Organizations course. Beyond that, there is flexibility for candidates with business-oriented research and teaching interests to fashion a teaching package that might include a combination of courses from such subjects as Antitrust Law, Business Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities Regulation, Taxation of Corporations, co-teaching in the Transactional Lawyering Skills Lab course; and other courses such as Health Care Law or Business Planning where knowledge of organizational structures strongly overlaps. The teaching package might also include participation in one of our innovative projects-based interdisciplinary entrepreneurship courses operated out of the Law School-led Center for Law, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, which connects faculty, staff, and students from multiple UMKC academic units and other programs with projects and in many cases collaborators from other institutions and organizations. Many of the Law School’s entrepreneurship endeavors have been supported by funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. We also welcome the inclusion of one or more other courses that offer critical perspectives on business law, which the candidate might propose to enrich the Law School’s business curriculum.
