Regulatory and Compliance Oversight: Oversee and manage compliance with federal, state, and international laws and regulations applicable to biomedical research (e.g., FDA, NIH, OHRP, GDPR, HIPAA).

Immigration and Visa Support: Partner with the Institute’s immigration law firm to ensure that service to foreign national community is appropriately supportive and timely.

Enterprise Leadership and Governance: Serve in a leadership capacity across all organizational entities, including subsidiaries and affiliated institutes.


Key activities:

Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the organization’s history, mission, founding principles, and evolution. Prepare written historical reviews of issues and challenges that the organization has managed.

Align legal approaches with long-term goals in scientific innovation, public impact, and sustainability.



Education/ Experience:

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school in the United States.

Active license to practice law and in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar; local federal courts; eligibility for in-house counsel registration, if required.

A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with progressively responsible roles, including experience advising executive leadership.


Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following legal areas relevant to scientific research:

     Contract negotiation and management, including research agreements, IP licensing, and vendor contracts.

     Regulatory compliance, including NIH, FDA, HIPAA, and other research-specific regulatory frameworks.

     Employment and labor law, including workplace investigations and policy development.

     Intellectual property law, including patents, copyrights, and technology transfer.

     Nonprofit or tax-exempt organization law, if applicable.

     Litigation and internal and governmental investigations


Strong understanding of legal issues related to scientific or biomedical research, including grants, data sharing, and ethical compliance.

Proven ability to exercise sound legal and ethical judgment in high-stakes and confidential matters.

Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS: Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated interest in a transactional practice, in particular, representing commercial banks in taxable and tax-exempt financings
Basic understanding and desire to develop expertise in conducting financing transactions
Ability to prepare, negotiate, and review financing documents including, without limitation, credit agreements, security agreements, deeds of trust and other collateral security documents
Ability to competently and professionally communicate with clients and supervising attorneys
Ability to manage multiple matters and tasks simultaneously and to complete tasks efficiently, effectively and in a timely manner
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Ability to learn new substantive legal topics and factual subject matters as needed based on the nature of a matter
Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet deadlines
Strong organization and matter management skills
Ability to work effectively with large working groups as part of a transaction team


QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience
Must be currently admitted to practice in Missouri with an active bar license in good standing or able to be admitted within the first year of employment
Experience in representing lenders and/or borrowers in financial transactions preferred
Graduation in the top 33% of law school preferred, however, all candidates will be considered
